Roleplaying
What is Roleplaying?
Roleplaying is, essentially, the developing and living of your character's life as if he or she was a real, living individual. It's a great way to expand your creativity, get some of the dust off of your imagination, improve your creative writing skills, and just get away from real life! When you roleplay, you put yourself into your character's mind, step out of your own personality (and any accompanying stresses that real life may bring!) and write a story alongside another player, detailing the interactions between your character and theirs. Roleplays can encompass any number of different styles or types of interactions - anything from a pleasant conversation by the bar, to forming a shady underground business partnership on the lower levels of Coruscant, to an epic battle between Jedi and Sith. The choices are limitless, and what you roleplay - and how you roleplay it - is completely up to you!
A typical roleplay may go as follows:
Greedo enters the cantina, looking around furtively as he seeks out his target. Jabba was going to pay him well for this one! It was finally his chance to make it big as a bounty hunter - once he had taken out today's target, his name would be all over the galaxy, the infamous Greedo, who had personally killed the ever-elusive Han Solo! He smirked - an awkward Rodian smirk, which didn't look much like a smirk at all - as he saw his target in a small corner booth of the cantina. The human stands as Greedo approaches, though, by all appearances, not as a result of Greedo's presence. The human doesn't even seem to notice Greedo. This was going to be too easy. Drawing his blaster, he sneaks up behind Solo, jabbing the muzzle directly into his side. "Going somewhere, Solo?" he utters in thickly-accented Huttese.
Han had been expecting this encounter for a long time. In fact, he was astounded he had been allowed to expect for so long with no results; he had nearly given up on the thought of meeting a bounty hunter over this. Jabba was either getting soft or slow, but it didn't matter to Han. But Han hadn't expected the encounter to happen today, in the middle of a crowded cantina. Of all the days, it had happened today, right on the very occasion when Han had finally struck a deal that would allow him to pay off Jabba once and for all. He grimaced as the muzzle of the blaster pressed hard into his side, throwing a glance behind him just long enough to identify his attacker: Greedo, a slimy Rodian bounty hunter he'd dealt with more than once. One way or another, today would likely be their last encounter. He rose his hands in the air slightly to indicate they were empty as he spoke. "Yes, Greedo. As a matter of fact, I was just going to see your boss. Tell Jabba that I've GOT his MONEY." Slowly and carefully, he slid back into his seat, resting one hand on the butt of his own blaster under the guise of the table... |
And so on. Although we do not actually allow the playing of canon characters from the Star Wars universe, such similar encounters may well be within the range of what you may RP (Roleplay) with another player. One thing should be made clear, however - unless you actually PK the other player during the RP, it is not ok to kill or maim another character without their permission. This falls into the category of godmoding, which includes anything that raises your character or its abilities beyond what is reasonably possible for a character in that position, or controlling any other player's character in any way. For example, while it's perfectly fine to shoot at another character that you're not in control of, it is considered godmoding if you state that the shot hits without giving the other player a chance to react. Other examples of godmoding include deftly dodging even the most impossible-to-dodge attacks or doing such things as blowing up a star destroyer with your bare hands. While there are no specific rules against doing these things, most players do not wish to play with someone who does this, and you will likely have a hard time finding people to RP with.
How do I get RP Points?
RP Points are a special innovation of Knights of Darkness and a few other MUDs that serve as a reward for roleplaying. In order to receive RP Points, simply log any RP you do and submit it to swreality@gmail.com. The easiest way to do this is to simply copy and paste each post of a roleplay into a text editor, and then copy and paste it all into an email when you're done, or attach the file with an email. Many prefer simple editors such as Windows Notepad, while others prefer more advanced editors like Microsoft Word. Anything you wish to use is perfectly ok!
At the beginning of each log, it is requested that you include the names of all characters included in the RP, as well as information regarding any NPCs and who is playing them. It is also requested that extraneous information, such as out-of-character discussion that takes place during the RP, be removed - the immortals have to read a lot of RPs every day, and it's very difficult on them if they have to skim over a lot of unimportant text and try to find the posts.
RP Points may also be awarded for roleplays that take place within the Forums, though it may speed up the process if you copy forum RPs into an email and submit them, as well. The immortals in charge of assigning RP Points are under no obligation to check the forum for new RPs, and may only do so sporadically.
What can I buy with them?
There are a lot of things you can buy with RP Points! The list of options is as follows:
1. 5 rp points to change room description.
2. 5 rp points can buy 100,000 credits
3. 10 rp points to buy an 8-ball
4. 15 rp points to add a room in a home, 10 room maximum.
5. 35 rp points can add another player home to a home that already has rooms.
6. 65 rp points to get a factory in the home.
7. 200 rp points will buy a special midship. (more room, more hull, special things through-out)
8. 400 rp points to get a Corvette
9. 350 rp points for 20 levels of the Force (4frc points)
You can not buy less then 20 levels to start with. Higher levels:

So, some of you have been complaining for a while about the lack of objectivity and consistency in the awarding of RP points, especially in light of the new RP leveling system discussion. Some of you have been complaining you weren't getting enough points, or that some imms were awarding a higher average than others, or that you didn't understand why your RPs were awarded the way they were, or that you generally felt that the guidelines we used to award points were too subjective, or any number of other complaints people have had in the past several years. Well, I'm here to tell you that we heard you. And we listened. It may have taken a bit for anything to come of it, but change is here, and I hope that this will lay to rest all the complaints that have been had - on both the player side and the imm side - regarding RP logs and awards for them. To make fully transparent the process we go through in awarding these points, here follows a brief summary of the guidelines that we will use for the awarding of points. You can download the exact guidelines in full, as presented to and referenced by our RP staff, in pdf format and microsoft word format. These downloadable copies contain an elaboration on the summary presented below, as well as tables containing exact descriptions of what we will be looking for in each category to obtain the maximum possible score. With this information, you will always be aware of what we are looking for in an RP, and able to make a reasonable estimate as to what your award will be by examining your RP under the very same guidelines we will use to award them. Of course, it's impossible to be 100% objective in something like this, but my hope is that these guidelines will be clear enough that the inconsistencies between one person's opinion and another will be kept to an absolute minimum, keeping objectivity and consistency as high as possible.
KoD Roleplaying Guidelines To help keep subjectivity and inconsistency to a minimum, ensure transparency of our processes, and in an attempt to address some concerns that have been made by both players an imms, we have developed a new, more objective system of RP awards. This system is based on the following three mantras: "Crap RP garners Crap Awards"We all know what crap RP looks like. I don't even have to define it. Fortunately, we don't see much of it, but some of it does come through. If your RP is obviously crap (by which we mean the quality, not the content, is crap - say it's just a string of five says that are entirely unrelated and accomplish nothing, for example, or an RP that's completely unrelated to Star Wars, etc), you'll get 1 point for it stock. This is the absolute minimum award and any RP will gain at least 1 point so long as it's *actually* an RP and not just a bunch of randomness. All the same, please don't RP crap. "Stock RP garners Stock Awards"By "stock," here, I mean any RP that you do multiple times without any great variance. This includes buying equipment, getting a clone, inducting a new member into your clan, or any RP that is done entirely over a channel with no physical interaction. This also includes RPs that use nothing but socials and the 'say' command. These RPs will be awarded a stock 2 points. Note that stock RPs do NOT, however, include RPs in the same contexts mentioned above that have a clear effort to make them something unique and enjoyable. If, for example, you buy equipment, but your purchase RP includes several long emotes or rechos, is a few pages long, and entails considerable IC interaction between the two characters beyond placing the order and picking it up, your RP will not be considered stock, but will be moved into the next category, which is... "Unique RP garners Unique Awards"Any RP that doesn't fall into the above two categories falls into this one. These RPs will be read in their entirety and evaluated, rather than being given stock awards as mentioned above. RPs will be evaluated based on four aspects: Language Proficiency, Depth, Character Development, and Length. Each of these will be ranked on a scale from 1-4 based on the criteria laid out in the guideline documents. Once these scores have all been tallied, an average will be made and rounded down. To this result, we will add a base score of 2, making all RPs in this category score a minimum of 3 points and a maximum of 6. Since we're rounding down, a score of 6 represents a perfect 4 in all four RP aspects, making it a very rare award and something to brag about if you should happen to receive it. The average reward will be a 4, with 5 representing above-average work and 6 representing outstanding work. This scale can and will be adjusted based on extenuating circumstances. A foreign player, for example, will likely be graded one point higher in language proficiency to cover for his or her "disability" in that area.
Once again, if you would like to download the full guidelines as they have been presented to the imms, including the grading criteria for all four RP aspects, they are available here in pdf format and microsoft word format.

Of note to anyone interested, the mud and the site are now on the same server, so you can now connect to the mud with simply "swkod.com" rather than "mud.swkod.com." They'll both get you the same schtick now.
